Marine Mentors was founded by Captain Lanny Dixon who, after 25 years of boating experience, saw a need for a service of this kind. Lanny and her husband Jim have spent 19 years as active members with the Fort Lauderdale Boat Club, cruising nearly every navigable waterway in the state of Florida, as well as the Bahamas. Her ideas were based on the premise, that Ft. Lauderdale being the "Venice of America" has special needs and responsibilities to the boating enthusiasts in the area. The need for training on and off the water is essential to the safety and continued enjoyment in this extremely busy marine area. Unfortunately, training and licensing are not required for all new boaters at this time. Power Squadron and Coast Guard Auxilary have continued to offer Basic Safe Boating classes, but until what has been learned behind the desk, can be applied at the helm, many new skippers are confused, frightened and can even be a hazard on the waterways. Our services were designed to give you an opportunity to learn Basic Boating Skills behind the wheel of your vessel, with an experienced licensed Captain. The sessions offered are for approximately 6 hours where you can learn to handle your boat or yacht. We can schedule you with a captain to meet your particular needs.
Marine Mentors offers at this time five different sessions.
